Libraries and bookstores all over the country are celebrating the 2012 Banned Books Week from September 30th – October 6th. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week which celebrates our freedom to read free of censorship by drawing attention to books that have been banned or challenged over the years for their controversial nature.
Since the inception of banned books week in 1982, over 11,300 books have been challenged! Bannedbooksweek.org has information about censorship and Banned Books Week events throughout the country. You can attend the Virtual ReadOut on a dedicated YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/bannedbooksweek) where readers like you exercise their First Amendment right to read banned books.
The American Library Association has created a timeline of significant banned books called Celebrating 30 Years of Liberating Literature. ALA also has lists of books that have been frequently banned or challenged over the years.
